Rich's Nepal Race

I very nearly forgot, Rich (Desert Racer) is currently running the Racing The Planet Nepal 2011- what an experience, I am quite jealous I admit!! You can email competitors on their website.

The scenery looks absolutely spectacular and this would have been right up there on my wish list if I hadn't just read the web site and discovered that they do this race in a different location each year and so it may not be in Nepal again :-(

Looking forwards to reading Rich's race report anyway!

Baby Steps...

I'm gutted to have missed the Brecon Beacons Ultra... again... sounds as though it was a great weekend. Next year... sigh...

My knee is still doing funny things when I kneel, but I haven't really ran on it, just been walking and using the Wii Fit. I intend to build back up slowly and see how it goes.

To cheer myself up I have been thinking of some events for next year. As well as all the 'usual suspects' I would like to knock off some more county marathons, and next year will be the year I complete the Bullock Smithy! The event I didn't complete and which has been hanging over me ever since September 2008!

I am planning on having a fairly cheap year next year travelwise as if I don't save up and swap the car it's likely to fall to bits!!

Ah well- time to inspire myself and go and trawl some events!

Injury!!!

Well- it was all going so well. I really felt as though I was getting back to my former fitness- I was running 6 miles, completed the Spires and Steeples in 7 hours flat and it all seemed to be easy.

But now- an injury has struck! It started off when I knelt down a couple of weeks ago- I felt a sudden sharp pain just below and to the right of my right knee. I first thought that I had knelt on something, but couldn't find anything. After this it became more and more noticeable, and the pain spread to a wider area every time I knelt.

Running didn't seem to actually cause pain, but the last couple of times I have ran, I have felt a tenderness in the affected area, and it seems slightly swollen. The sharp pain only occurs when I kneel, although I can replicate it by beding my leg right back and pressing lightly on the skin.

I have no idea what it is... the nearest thing I have found which matches the symptoms is Jumper's Knee- but I haven't done any jumping!!

It means I have had to make some tough decisions... the Brecon Beacons Ultra is only a fortnight away and I was starting to hope I may be able to actually complete the whole thing. But I really don't fancy pushing myself for 45 miles and possibly doing long term harm- even one lap would be risky, as I felt it more when I was running uphill and the Beacon's course is most definately not flat!!

Another deciding factor is the fact that my nephew is waiting to have major surgery to correct severe scoliosis at any time- we are just waiting on a date- and I will be needed to go up to Blackpool and lend my sis a hand during his initial recovery period.

So I have reluctantly decided to pull out of the race- I am gutted as I missed it last year due to a nasty cold/ chest infection. I am determined that next year I will return and complete both laps!!

I went to the gym today, but only stuck to the weights and the elliptical trainer. Afterwards I popped upstairs to the DW Sports shop and ran gently on the treadmill whilst they analysed my gait. Turns out that I don't over pronate as badly as I thought, but the guy serving (who also runs) suggested I stick to the wider fitting control shoe makes such as Brookes (which I tend to use), Asics and New Balance. He said that Nike control shoes don't provide the same protection as other makes so he would advise against them. I don't think this was sales patter as they were selling Nike shoes.

The spooky thing is I have been running in a pair of Nikes for ages- in fact, I have been making them last longer than they should- could this have caused the knee problem!?!

I bought a pair of New Balance shoes as they don't sell Brookes, but they seem very comfy and I even got to try them on and have a wee jog on the treadmill first.

I am going to ease off the running for a couple of weeks to see how the knee responds and then build back up slowly. Hope everyone else is ok and injury free!
