Exams...

It's Katie's exam tomorrow... we went to my gym, The Engine Room, to practice Thursday night, which was slightly embarrassing as she had to 'teach' me to do various stretches and use equipment, and I'm sure people recognise me there! She is picking me up at 8am... groan...

I am finding it really difficult to motivate myself at the minute... I feel quite tired, and it's hard to make myself get out there and walk/ run for hours on end, when I want to spend time with friends and family, or just potter around and tinker with my web site...

I suppose most people get training blues once in a while, it does take up an incredible amount of time. I have kept my mileage up, just haven't done any runs longer than 10 miles... I have been walking with a 5.5kg pack, and been to the gym. I have a 26 mile route in mind for next weekend, actually it's two walks which both start and finish in the same place, one 14 miles and one 12 miles, so they can be done in a kind of figure of eight...

I really ought to go to bed- I am really tired and have eaten chips and lots of chocolate- very bad!!

Full Of Cold!!

Aah no, I have come down with a cold and feel like sh*te!! Not good news... as a result I haven't done anything more strenuous than use my mini stepper whilst watching copious amounts of telly for the past two nights... may try a walk later, but I don't want to jeopardise the Grindleford Gallop on Saturday...

Somebody told me you shouldn't run with a cold... it affects your heart or something. Or is this me just looking for a cop out!

Seriously- all I feel like doing is slobbing out with a book and massive bar of chocolate. Speaking of chocolate, I have got to have a bit of a rant... I don't get those little bars of chocolate sold, in packs, with the title 'fun size' bars... excuse me?? What is the 'fun' part of two miniscule inches of chocolate?

Now- anything 100g or over... surely that's fun size...

Internet Problems...

I have had so many problems this week, what with sudden computer crashes, and then the computer kept getting stuck trying to connect to t' internet.

Everytime I tried to shut it down, it either refused to reopen AOL or all of my icons on the desk top disappeared and the only thing I could do was to shut it down!

I tried reinstalling AOL which didn't work, so I left it a couple of days, switched it on just now and decided to see if it would connect- and it did! Of course, it may still crash at any moment...

Went to the gym Thursday and today, with Katie. I have been gradually building up the running to 10 minutes running, 2 minutes walking and another 15 minutes running, and concentrating on 6mph and above, today I did a lot of work at 6.3mph and above. Trouble was, I forgot to take my towel, so grabbed some tissue from the dispensers in the gym. It was a pretty poor substitute, but as least it was something to mop up the sweat.

I stuffed it into the drinks holder on the arm of the treadmill, and, whilst doing a steady 6.3mph pace, reached for it. I forgot that the emergency stop button was in the same area, and obviously accidentally pressed it as I suddenly went from 6.3mph to nil in the space of 0.2 seconds! I nearly ended up on the bike in front!!

I have also been going back on the ellipticals and increasing the tension, plus jogging on an increasing incline. Touch wood, the heel continues to be ok!

I am going to try a 5 mile slow run tomorrow night. Right now, I reeeaaally fancy some chocolate, and am desperately trying to resist the urge...

Physio Again...

I had my second physio session today. I followed her into the room, she sat down, looked at her notes and said "Oh, you're the mad one! The one who's going to run aross the Sahara!"

I had more ultrasound and massage- she said that she could feel where the Achilles tendon has thickened. She advised me not to run for another week, but feels things are on the mend... I have another session booked for next week, and she said that we can look at starting off by running and walking. My mum had panicked me as she told me that a friend of a friend's Achilles snapped, and she spent 12 weeks in plaster! I asked her if mine was in danger of snapping, and she said 'No', but then told me not to sue her if it does! Seriously, she said that it's likely to snap if it's very sore and 'grindy' constantly for quite a long while. Which it's not- the only time it's bothered me is after the Valleys and Views, and even then not for long.

I told her about the Morocco trek, she said that she doesn't think that will harm it.

I did my usual 5 1/2 mile cross country route last night- but walked it! I did wear my rucksack with 2 filled 2 litre water bottles and a heavy pair of shoes for a bit of an extra workout. I usually go to the gym Thursdays, but will go tomorrow, as I was later home from work today. May be an idea to rest the heel as the physio seems to make it slightly 'grindy'. I think I'll use my mini stepper and cross trainer and watch last night's apprentice (don't tell me who got fired!!)

A trip to the local garage may be in order... I seem to have developed a chocolate craving today and may just have to obey it!!

Thank God For Weekends

I am so tired, I am ready for a lie in tomorrow, I have my Saturday morning routine... I will get out of bed, pull clothes on over my nightclothes, visit the newsagents (handy when you live above the shops) and crawl back into bed, with newspaper, cup of coffee.....and chocolate. Bliss!

I went to the gym last night; I started to run on the treadmill and had the usual not-pain sensation in the heel which died down. The new shoes are fine, and I felt good- I did more than I intended, 30 minutes running covering 3 miles. Got up to 7mph and kept thinking to myself "You are an awesome running machine!" (yeah right!)

I haven't suffered today so looking good hopefully. I may go and do a slow 4 1/2 miles in a bit- I am building up mileage outside slooowly.

The improvement works to the flats still has not finished; good considering we all had letters stating that scaffolding was going to be erected for a fortnight from 3rd Jan! It has all but been taken down now; there is still work to be done, but at least it's not quite like living on a building site.

Co-ordinated!

I've just realised something... the colours of my blog are quite 'deserty', maybe it's more than a coincidence that I picked this layout...

I haven't been running today. Instead, the only exercise I've done is walk to mum's house to water the plants (about half a mile) and trough vast quantities of food...

At least the Easter Eggs are gone now. And tomorrow is another day! Plus an extra day's rest may have done my ankle good (that's my excuse...)

I am most definately going to go to the gym in the morning and am also going to make an absolute point of posting my weekly exercise totals each week. Not that this weeks will be tremendously exciting!

Half Marathon Ready??

Well, I have my first half marathon on Sunday, the Belvoir half.. this will be my first half marathon. I managed a slow 12 mile run last weekend, and have been tapering this week (although went a bit mad in the gym last night as it was really quiet; only about three others in there!)

I have a slight left heel pain, not where the achilles is, but further down, so I'm hoping that it doesn't develop into anything more serious.

It's Good Friday today but no work. The builders are still here though, and predictably, as soon as I got my lunch and sat down at the computer, they suddenly appeared at the window, working on my flat! Nothing more offputting than having two blokes watching you eat lunch!

Been a bit naughty with hot cross buns too... my mum has bought me a Cadbury's Caramel Easter Egg with a massive bar of Cadbury's caramel in it, so after my run Sunday I plan to do it some serious damage!

I can't stop thinking about the Marathon des Sables (think I'll shorten it to the MdS). I have been reading accounts of folks experiences and I am very scared! Apparently 2006 was the toughest race yet due to excessive heat and humidity; 170 people dropped out of the race! 2007 weather was back to normal though, with far less drop outs... let's hope 2009 will be normal too!

I'm not underestimating this. It is going to be an enormous challenge. The defining point of my life so far... I feel that everything I do, every walk or run I undertake from this point onwards is leading up to March 2009 in the desert...
